Social Bookmarking

Social Bookmarking - What is it?

People have been saving links to Web sites for many years. These links, or bookmarks, were usually stored on a persons personal computer and only accessible through their “Favorites” button on their Internet explorers tool bar. Social bookmarking sites is a new way for Internet users to store these bookmarks. With these new social bookmarking sites users can save their bookmarks to a Web page and can access them from any computer on the Web. Social bookmarking sites allow users to save their favorite articles, blogs, music, reviews, RSS feeds and more.

Social bookmarking has created a new way for Web site visitors to organize and categorize information and resources. They represent the user's personal library and when combined with other personal libraries, they allow for many social networking opportunities.

How Do You Do It?

Creating a collection of social bookmarks is quite simple. First you must register with a social bookmarking site – and there are many to choose from. Once you have registered you will be able to store bookmarks, share them, and categorize them with the use of keywords or tags.

Tags are terms or keywords that are associated with or assigned to a piece of information such as a picture, map, blog entry, video clip, article, etc. The tag is a way of describing a piece of information therefore enabling classification and search of information. They also enable viewing bookmarks associated with a chosen tag, and include information about the number of users who have bookmarked them.

These sites allow users to search for Internet bookmarks saved by others and add them to their own collection and subscribe to the lists of others.

Why Is Social Bookmarking Important To You?

Social bookmarking makes it easy for your Web site visitors to bookmark your web site, your blog and subscribe to your RSS feeds. If your Web site visitors add your site, blog and/or RSS to their bookmarks, they are essentially promoting you, generating more traffic to your site and more subscribers to your blog and RSS feeds.

Because of the increase in popularity and the increase in competition, many social bookmarking services offer more than just the ability to share bookmarks. Many now offer the ability to rate bookmarks, comment on bookmarks, they have added the ability to import and export, add notes, reviews, email links, automatic notification, feed subscription, create groups and of course, social networks.
