Sorry I haven't done a newsletter in a while. I’ve been so busy! With developing several large Internet projects and writing books — I’m writing Social Media for Business, as well as Online Social Media and PR for Hotels, Online Social Media and PR for B&Bs, and Online Social Media and PR for Destination Marketing Organizations — I’ve barely had time to relax and pamper myself, but I’m loving it!

Social Media has exploded and so has the consulting side of my business. I’m now doing Social Media Strategies and Maximizing Online Success Programs, all while doing Phase 1 of the renovation of my dream home right on the lake in Nova Scotia. I know, I’m so excited! But now, I am back and the newsletter is on track.

Social Media - DON'T Jump On The Bandwagon

 Everyone’s jumping on the bandwagon, but a lot of people are also wasting plenty of time in the process. Now, it has become more like social NOT working rather than social networking.

Admit it, it’s all getting a bit too much! We need to step back and look at the objectives, target markets and our products and services first before doing anything hasty. Moreover, we also have to consider the time we have to devote; the personnel, expertise and budget we need to allocate; what we want to accomplish; and what success would look like and how we will measure it.

Document the strategy

For example, let’s say you have determined that Facebook® is the preferred social media venue for marketing a specific product or service you need. You have to determine which element will fit with your objectives, and the time and budget you’ll need to get the results you’re looking for and be well received. Will it be through page posts? A targeted ad you will run? A group discussion? Or, an application like Marketplace? With so many questions, you need to have your strategy in place before anything else.

Know all the options: what you need to do, what you want to do and how far you want and could go.

Explore your objectives: why do you prefer this social media over another?

Take a closer look at your target markets: are they really going to benefit from what you have in mind? Will your social media get you closer to or farther from them?

You need to plan and have a strategy that fits like a glove. You need to know what success means to you first, and know how you will measure it. Only then can you jump.
